REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS
Like so many others, I was a bit amused when I had first learned of Plextor’s decision to move into the SSD fold, a company best known for it’s optical drives. They took an even larger gamble by choosing the Marvell controller alone and not getting sucked into the Vortex of choosing that of which seemed best at the time. Some might say that they have lost a bit in SSD selection as a result, whereas, this choice seems to have done them very well.
Plextor now has the ability to play a part in their final firmware release and, in the case of their new SSD families, they speak highly of ‘True Speed’ which speaks directly to high performance and that sustained performance over the life of the drive. True Speed could show great dividends down the road.
Examining the performance of the M5S closely, it’s Vantage results are a bit lower than that of the M3 Pro and M3 but this drive has consistency in each and every test thrown at it. It is an upper tier solid state drive that should do very well, dependent on its price point especially considering the significant drops we have seen in SSD prices as of late. As a negative, we would have liked to see a five year warranty as well as a 2.5″ to 3.5″ desktop adapter included, but these are not key factors if product quality and pricing is there.
All in all, congratulations Plextor on a great transition into the SSD arena as your SSDs are solid and we would have no problem recommending them to the consumer.
EXTRA PIKS!
m5s? m3s?
I was expecting it to be using 3rd gen marvell controller(88SS9187).
Pour sa nouvelle gamme M5S, Plextor a préféré choisir un contrôleur Marvell 88SS9174 qui commence à se faire vieux. Dommage qu’il n’ait pas opté pour le dernier contrôleur Marvell 88SS9187.
