Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSD Review – Value and Performance Go Mainstream

3D MARK STORAGE GAMING BENCHMARK

UL Solutions has created a new storage gaming benchmark that we will start to use as new SSDs come in. The 3DMark Storage Benchmark DLC extends 3DMark Advanced Edition with a dedicated component test for measuring the gaming performance of SSDs and other storage hardware. It supports all the latest storage technologies and tests practical, real-world gaming performance for activities such as loading games, saving progress, installing game files, and recording gameplay video streams.

The Samsung 990 EVO Plus placed 22nd in all SSDs tested in 3DMark to date.

REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS

Samsung has been around since the beginning of SSDs and they have built a great reputation and solid fanbase, regardless of the specific device actually.  We might guess that it would be quite the search finding a home without something Samsung within, especially since there is so many electronics that many don’t even realize contain Samsung components.  Long story short… there are many that will buy the 990 EVO Plus simply because it is Samsung and they believe it is a brand that can be trusted.  And that’s partially why we are here in a way… to provide those people with an honest and impartial opinion of the Samsung 990 EVO Plus Gen 4 (and Gen 5) NVMe SSD.

Performance of this SSD tops 7GB/s throughput and 1 million IOPS which would normally mean that this type of SSD might be such that a heatsink is required for use.  Not in this case.   Not only does Samsung have a great low power and small footprint (5nm) solution in their Piccolo DRAMless SSD controller, but also, they nickel plate to guarantee effective heat dissipation.  Add to that a single 2TB (or 1TB) NAND chip which might jump to two chips in the case of the 4TB 990 EVO Plus, and you still have a SSD containing two maybe three chips at most.  This provides for a cool running high performing and high capacity SSD that doesn’t require the bulk of a necessary heatsink. It’s about time.

Reviewers get a guide when asked to review a product and the Samsung Review Guide for the 990 EVO Plus had a very down to earth term, ‘Upgrade Everyday Performance’.  This SSD speaks to just that.  It provides a very fast upgrade to the largest number of SSD users who simply enjoy their PC use on a daily basis.  Yes this excludes myself and so many other high end media professionals that pump through countless numbers of photos, music, and video and are always seeking the biggest and fastest to make our work product just that much more efficient.  But I will tell you something..  The Samsung 990 EVO Plus would have been a godsend to just this crowd not too long ago.  7TB speeds with over a million IOPS at 4TB a 5-year warranty and it doesn’t require a heatsink?  Unheard of.

And then there is value.  Having just reviewed the very similar Kingston NV3 Gen 4 2TB SSD not two days back, I can safely say that the Samsung 990 EVO Plus isn’t the cheapest on the block in its form factor (DRAMless), but it sure reaches to be included in the Niche of high performing SSDs.  Now throw in that the 990 EVO Plus is just as capable running in PCIe 5.0 as it is in PCIe 4.0.  That is unheard of.
