3D MARK STORAGE GAMING BENCHMARK
UL Solutions has created a new storage gaming benchmark that we will start to use as new SSDs come in. The 3DMark Storage Benchmark DLC extends 3DMark Advanced Edition with a dedicated component test for measuring the gaming performance of SSDs and other storage hardware. It supports all the latest storage technologies and tests practical, real-world gaming performance for activities such as loading games, saving progress, installing game files, and recording gameplay video streams.
The PNY XLR8 pulled ahead of much of the competition in our 3DMark Storage Benchmark, seated at No. 3 spot.
REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS
Lots to say with respect to the PNY XLR8 Gen 5 1TB SSD and the first is that I’d wished PNY would have sent along the 2TB sample as it is a better performing variant. Not often we see 1TB samples these days and testing takes longer as the drive has to be optimized over and over, due to filling with sample data. And of course we can’t achieve those top speeds. The PNY XLR8 is an upper tier SSD, keeping in mind that this is a dual-sided SSD that we are certain requires the dual fan cooling solution as tested. We aren’t throwing this in a laptop and getting those 11GB/s speeds. Similarly one might have to do some clever USB port placement if purchasing the RGB variant as that gets plugged into one of your motherboard USB ports and, at least I never seem to find enough of these on motherboards. There are things we like about this drive and that True Data Testing result was one of them. Unbeatable.
The PNY XLR8 Gen5 SSD performed at what we might consider an upper tier SSD level with highs of just under 12GB/s read and just above 10GB/s write, and 1.5 million IOPS. This would be an excellent desktop SSD and definitely a gamer. Something that’s most impressive these days is that we are seeing these upper tier SSDs at great prices. This SSD can be had right now at Amazon for as low as $153 and it comes with a heatsink and 5-year limited warranty.
