Wise Type B 2TB & PRO 160/640GB CFExpress Memory Card Review – Understanding the Capacity/Sustained Write Trade Off

TEMPS, SUSTAINED WRITES AND TRUE DATA TESTING

TEMPERATURES

Two characteristics that became very important with the introduction of CFexpress as a mainstream storage medium were temperature and sustained write speeds.  We measure temperature by monitoring and updating a  Crystal DiskInfo Benchmark while a large 85GB 8K file transfer is being performed.  This is the extreme of what one might see in this environment.

An important aspect to remember is that the temperature results we obtain are the extreme.  They are the hottest the card got during any period of our testing which was constantly monitored.  It does not speak to the median or typical temperatures one might expect.  Having said that, the results we obtained from the three Wise cards were as expected, falling in just behind the ProGrade and Delkin cards that were also released with new temperature optimized firmware.

SUSTAINED WRITE PERFORMANCE

We determine sustained write performance by transferring a 85GB 8K media folder from the PC to the CFexpress Type B card.  This test is vital to those looking at digital storage for high end 4K and 8K video recording.

This is the meat and gravy of this entire report.  The top sustained write performance was brought in by the Wise 640GB Pro Card while it was just a bit lower (as might be expected) for the Wise 160GB Pro Card.  Comparing these to the Wise 2TB card, we see a significant drop with respect to sustained write performance.  Let’s do an overall comparison with all we have tested to date…

We were rather surprised to see the Wise 640GB Pro surpass sustained write performance of the ProGrade cards.   Wise has also conducted extensive compatibility testing for all of their cards which can be found here.

REAL WORLD FILE TRANSFER COMPARISON

For our Real World File Transfer Comparison of the world’s top CFexpress Type B cards, we have included all cards that we have received to date. This test is conducted through the transfer of data from one spot on the test drive to another to give us the truest of transfer speed results for that device.

Our True Data Testing demonstrated that the Wise CFExpress Type B Pro cards, not only move OS data very well, but have some amazing transfer speeds with respect to video, music and photos.  Combined, the Wise Pro Cards have provided some of the best Transfer Comparison Test results we have received yet.

Les, In the second paragraph you state the Canon EOS R5 can capture photos at 20 per minute. This should actually state 20 per second. From Canon’s website: “EOS R5 camera features a selectable electronic (silent) shutter mode, and can capture images at up to 20 fps”.

Awesome. Thank you for the review! Looks like I know what to get between the three CFx-B card; ProGrade Digital Cobalt 650GB, Delkin Devices Black 512GB and Wise advanced Pro 650GB.
Delkin devices Black 512GB looks like a clear winner in terms of performance and operating temperature follow by ProGrade’s and then Wise’s.

“The 640GB sample is most likely a 1TB CFExpress card overprovisioned.”
I would challenge that assumption, as it makes more sense that the 640GB card is actually a 2TB card with overprovisioning. Multiply 640GB (or 660GB for some other manufacturers) by three and you get near enough to 2TB. Additionally, notice how 2TB and 640GB are the highest capacity cards in each product series, meaning that they probably have the same nand chip quantity and density.
