TEMPS, SUSTAINED WRITES AND TRUE DATA TESTING
TEMPERATURES
Two characteristics that became very important with the introduction of CFexpress as a mainstream storage medium were temperature and sustained write speeds. We measure temperature by monitoring and updating a Crystal DiskInfo Benchmark while a large 85GB 8K file transfer is being performed. This is the extreme of what one might see in this environment.
Lexar has dropped its maximum temperature significantly since its earlier release of the 128GB capacity of this same card a few months back. This is especially appealing when you consider that the Lexar Professional Gold 2TB memory card has a very healthy sustained write transfer speed making it a very attractive card for media professionals.
SUSTAINED WRITE PERFORMANCE
We determine sustained write performance by transferring a 85GB 8K media folder from the PC to the CFexpress Type B card. This test is vital to those looking at digital storage for high end 4K and 8K video recording.
Although we hope to see a very smooth and steady sustained write speed during data transfer, the sustained write speed of 1.6GB/s is the best we have seen to date.
REAL WORLD FILE TRANSFER COMPARISON
For our Real World File Transfer Comparison of the world’s top CFexpress Type B cards, we have included all cards that we have received to date. This test is conducted through the transfer of data from one spot on the test drive to another to give us the truest of transfer speed results for that device.
The Data Transfer speed of the Lexar Professional Gold Series 2TB CFExpress Type B Memory Card is a very respectable 6th best of all cards tested to date.
REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS
On initial receipt of the Lexar Professional GOLD 2TB CFExpress Type B Card we had to wonder why it never had the VPG400 certification much like the recent Lexar Professional Diamond card we had recently reviewed. Matter of fact, we are still wondering that as listed specs speak to 1300MB/s and we hit the highest we had seen to date at 1.6GB/s in our testing. This card would easily pass VPG400 certification as its sustained writes are 4x that standard.
The Lexar Professional Gold 2TB CFexpress B Memory Card has much more than that however. Not only did its speeds come in at just under 1900MB/s read and 1800MB/s write, but also, our results were consistent throughout all tests and this card even comes with a lifetime limited warranty. This card has performance. It has capacity and it has a great lifetime warranty. Price. We are seeing the Lexar Professional GOLD 2TB Cfexpress Card listed at Amazon right now for $729 which is mid-range to similar cards with lesser specifications. The Lexar Professional GOLD may be priced just right for the media professional. Editor’s Choice.
Would be interesting to do a larger write test to see if it is simply an MLC/TLC/QLC buffer issue?
Like all of your performance is within the range of common SLC cache sizes, but what happens at 300GB+ of sustained writes?
Modern 2TB SSDs tend to have ~200+GB of SLC caching before performance tanks severely.
