OCZ OPENS THE SSD VAULT AT THE ARIA DURING CES – INNOVATION

THE HELIOS

New on the block will be the OCZ Helios which is available in mlc, emlc and slc and is in the 3.5″ form factor.  Mlc and emlc capacities will top at 1024GB with 800 GB usable while the slc versions will follow suit with 512GB with 400GB max usable.  There is no need to guess at the processor with speeds of 550MB/s read and 540MB/s write with a random 4k write IOPS of 85k, however, the use of two SandForce SF-1565 processors was a bit of a surprise.  Notice the famous Super Capacitor which resembles a mini Jiffy Pop Popcorn package.  It protects data in the event of sudden power loss to the drive.

IBIS HSDL OPTICAL

Many are already familiar with the 3.5″ IBIS HSDL (High Speed Data Link) as shown in the top portion of the picture but the bottom is rather unique as it is actually showing data transfer through an optical connection which can push the transfer rate to an amazing 20Gb/s.  This is a leap from the already amazing transfer speeds of 740MB/s read and 720MB/s write with 125k IOPS at 4k random write access.

IBIS XL

Last but not least, we have the IBIS XL which demonstrates exactly what OCZ is capable of by combining up to 4 IBIS pcbs for a total of 4TB storage and with rocket speeds of 1800MB/s read and 1700MB/s write with 200k IOPS at 4k random write access and this fits into a 5.25″ drive bay.  Can you imagine?

For those with the coin, remember this is simply a technology demo and this product is not an ‘off the shelf’ sale item.  It is OCZs very successful display at how they can customize their technology for virtually any application and maximize its potential.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Our time with Jessica, Daryl and OCZ was a great experience.  With achievements shown in the SSD SATA 2 line, they have now set a footprint of success with their upcoming SATA III line and ‘upped the ante’ by grabbing hold of the industry with the Revo, Revo 2 and Z Drive PCI form factor drives.  Regardless of your budget, OCZ has the performance and capacity to suit your needs.
