External storage is still neglected by far too many. Considering it is the key ingredient of data loss at all levels, it’s cost sits comfortably in the billions. Millions of people lose personal and business data daily and perhaps one of the key reasons is the belief that this is typically a business or enterprise problem. At the human level, far to few invest in external storage because of the inconvenience. It is too large, too expensive and takes too long to back up, at least until one loses a lifetime of photo or video memories, their electronic tax information or even bank information and records. Seagate wants to make that easier.
On our bench today is the newly released Seagate Ultra Compact SSD and it is small, just a tad longer than a AA battery in fact. The Seagate Ultra Compact is available in one and two terabyte capacities and is capable of data transfer speeds in excess of 1000MB/s read and write as it is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 10GBps device.
I am often amused at how storage has changed throughout the years. This is the Seagate Ultra Compact 2TB SSD beside a 3.5″ hard drive of yesteryear, the latter being some 40 times heavier. The Seagate Ultra Compact is fully compatible with Windows, MacOS, Android and iPhone devices and connects by way of USB Type-C in order to achieve the high data transfer rates.
The Seagate Ultra Compact SSD measures 2.73″ x 0.7″ x 0.34″ and weighs a mere 19.6g. It is constructed of a one-piece grey aluminum shell which guarantees the integrity of the structure in drops or if it were to be run over. It comes with a 3-year warranty and is guaranteed for a 3-metre drop when its silicone shell is on, is IP54 rated against dust and water resistance, and comes with a silicone cap, sleeve and a lanyard as shown in this photo below.
Seagate has gone the extra mile with this device, guaranteeing its composition to be of at least 35% recycled materials and includes a bevy of free software to include Seagate Toolkit Backup, Seagate SeaTools for SSD optimization, a 6-month subscription of DropBox backup, 6-month subscription of Mylio Photos and a 3-year subscription of Rescue Data Recovery.
MSRP for the Seagate Ultra Compact Portable SSD is listed at $99.99 (1TB) and $179.99 for the 2TB version. Let’s check out the next page for product specific and speed metrics. Check Amazon pricing!
