CRYSTAL DISK BENCHMARK VER. 8.0.4 x64
Crystal Disk Benchmark is used to measure read and write performance through sampling of random data which is, for the most part, incompressible. Performance is virtually identical, regardless of data sample so we have included only that using random data samples.
THROUGHPUT
IOPS
Although listed specifications call for a high speed of 6700MB/s, we were only able to achieve 6023MB/s. This was our reasoning for checking other reviews, only to learn there hadn’t been another even reaching 6GB/s as of yet. As well, LaCie has been very transparent in the fact that this SSD contains a 50GB cache and that , once the cache is full, data transfer write speeds drop to 1400MB/s on the 2TB and 1800MB/s on the 4TB version. Crystal Diskmark confirmed this for us.
TxBench is one of our newly discovered benchmarks that we works much the same as Crystal DiskMark, but with several other features. Advanced load benchmarking can be configured, as well as full drive information and data erasing via secure erase, enhanced secure erase, TRIM and overwriting. ANVIL STORAGE UTILITIES PROFESSIONAL
Anvil’s Storage Utilities (ASU) are the most complete test bed available for the solid state drive today. The benchmark displays test results for, not only throughput but also, IOPS and Disk Access Times. Not only does it have a preset SSD benchmark, but also, it has included such things as endurance testing and threaded I/O read, write and mixed tests, all of which are very simple to understand and use in our benchmark testing.
REPORT SUMMARY AND FINAL THOUGHTS
Let’s start with the elephant in the room. The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 Thunderbolt 5 Portable NVMe SSD is the fastest external drive in the world today. Even considering that listed specs are 700MB/s higher (6.7GB/s) than our result of 6GB/s, we have never had anything remotely close to this fast in an external storage device. That’s not all. This device is capable of moving data both ways at up to 80GBps but if data is travelling one way, LaCie specs recognize that this speed bumps to 120Gbps.
Sure there are little things such as how a pouch would have been a nice inclusion or consideration of a longer cord, but this is made up of that IP68 rating, although I really don’t see myself drive over this or even submerging it in water any time soon. This external PC is a powerhouse. We will point out that we have a concern with pricing, however, but we could probably guess that LaCie is paying premium themselves for that Thunderbolt 5 connector within the device. This is a niche product that will be purchased by content creators and media professionals that can recognize greater efficiency in their work flow in result. Editor’s Choice and great job LaCie!
