I am a bit embarrassed and my sincerest apologies to ADATA. I have had this SE920 ADATA USB4 2TB External SSD sitting on my desk for over a year and only today does it get my attention. Well actually, it gained a great deal of attention way back when I realized that two Z790 PCs with USB4 did not work with full USB4 capability. The top speed from both systems was 3.2GB/s which was above that of typical Thunderbolt 3 at 2.8GB/s, but we weren’t satisfied posting a report that didn’t reach the advertised specs. New PC built just yesterday with Thunderbolt 5 capable of pulling out full USB performance…new day.
The funny thing is that this is one of those oh so rare unique SSDs. It is 40Gbps USB4 and capable of speeds up to 3.8GB/s read and 3.7GB/s write data transfer speeds. It comes with a USB4 40Gbps Type-C to Type-C data cable that enables such fast data transfer.
If you are using another Type-C cable, it has to be a 40Gbps cable to achieve these speeds. The ADATA SE920 is of a metal construction, USB-powered and is available in 1, 2 and 4TB capacities. Did we mention that it is also expandable with active cooling within?
That’s right. If you push down on the top gently, the drive expands from 4.1″ to 4’8″ and an internal cooling fan dissipates heat, in total silence. Top down…no fan. This external SSD is controlled by an ASM2464PD USB4 SSD controller with 3D NAND and there is a blue LED visible when opened that identifies SSD activity.
Checking Amazon, we see the ADATA SE920 listed at $179.99 for the 1TB, $269.99 for the 2TB and $499.99 for the 4TB version. This SSD comes with a 5-year limited warranty.
Let’s check out some speeds…
