Samsung has had a strong track record with SSDs. Their drives offer high reliability as well as high performance for those with a need for speed. They are one of the few manufacturers that designs and manufacturers every major SSD component in their drives. That alone should tell you about their expertise and strength in the industry. And it is because of these reasons that this week’s SSD of the Week will be highlighting the top consumer SATA SSD in the market, the Samsung 850 Pro!
The Samsung 850 Pro is a 7mm 2.5″ form factor and is available in four capacities, 128GB ($118.99), 256GB ($187.99), 512GB ($375.99), and 1TB ($599.00). What is really cool about the new 850 Pro is that it is the first ever consumer SSD with 3D NAND, featuring Samsung’s second generation 3D V-NAND. This new NAND allows for lower power consumption, twice as much endurance as planar 2D NAND. Other features for the SSD include TRIM, S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring, DevSleep, AES 256-bit hardware encryption that supports TCG/Opal V2.0, Encrypted Drive (IEEE1667), and Samsung Magician’s RAPID mode RAM caching support.
As with all consumer Samsung SSDs, you get access to their data migration software as well as their Magician toolbox to monitor the drive, update firmware, as well as secure erase it if need arises.
Not only does Samsung’s 850 Pro have great features, but it offers high performance as well. Sequential reads and writes max out at 550MB/s and 520MB/s respectively. 4K reads hit 100,000 IOPS and writes reach 90,000 IOPS. And for endurance, it is rated for up to 150TB total bytes written.
Finally, to top everything off, Samsung is covering this drive with a 10 year warranty, which speaks directly to product quality. It is only one of two drives in the market today to offer such a long warranty. The only other is the SanDisk Extreme Pro.
So, if high quality, high endurance, and high performance is on your list for your next SSD purchase…
512gb xp941 or 2×850 256gb for performance on x99?
What is your usage model? Personally, I would go 2×850 RAID 0 or a single 850 Pro 512GB. 10 year warranty and save $120 towards something else.
This is not a review, but a shitty sponsored article, mentioning every bulletpoint Samsung wants to see. – 2nd comment, feel free to delete suckers –
