It was refreshing to see SSD manufacturers going into incredible detail to provide an understanding of their SSD products this year at Computex. This particularly stands true of both BIWIN and APacer who spoke to power loss protection by explaining the purpose of capacitors, and even type, in their booth displays. APacer went one further to even provide the buyer a choice of which capacitor went into their build. We see the traditional SuperCapacitor on the left with the Tantulum capacitor on the right:
The purpose of the capacitor is to provide enough power to the SSD to complete the transfer of data from the controller to the memory at times of power loss. In providing a selection to its clients, APacer used this chart to differentiate between the two providing that, although the Tantulum is more expensive, it has better a better temperature range and longer lifespan overall:
We spoke of BIWINs power loss testing where they chose to use a LSI SandForce driven SSD in an earlier article this morning, however, thought we might include their product display here where they describe why they choose Tantulum capacitors in their products:
Once again, this demo monitors data loss and SSD condition and this LSI SandForce controlled SSD has successfully overcome 45 power loss scenarios:
Hey Les, I bet you are having a great time at the show! I wish I were there 🙂
