Sony Electronics is dipping its toe into the consumer SSD market with the release of their new SLW-M series of consumer SSDs. Sony had been selling some SSDs in Japan, but this is their first foray into the international SSD market.

The SLW-M is to be sold in two capacity points – 240GB (SLW-MG2) and 480GB (SLW-MG4). They are built on the standard 2.5” x 7MM form factor with a SATA 6Gb/s interface. Sony is advertising sequential read speeds of up to 560 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 530 MB/s.
Each SLW-M SSD includes a 9.5mm spacer/adapter, and a free license key to download Acronis True Image 2015 HD drive cloning software. Also included is Sony’s own drive management software – the Sony SSD Toolbox.
Sony did not specify the controller or NAND being used, but DIYPC-HK got its hands on one and disassembled it to reveal a rebranded Phison S10 series NAND controller and Toshiba A19 TLC NAND flash.
