It hasn’t been two weeks since we posted a detailed writeup of SMART’s new UltraDimm and they were one of the first to be seen in the display area of FMS for some great shots. Not only could the quality of this product be seen through their presentation, but also, their combined effort with partners Diablo and Marvell was obvious. Let’s get a first hand look at the UltraDimm.
The SMART UltraDIMM is available in capacities of 200 and 400GB and connect to systems by way of the DIMM socket. This allows a direct connection to the flash channel which creates the opportunity for ultra low latency. Each UltraDIMM is capable of 1GB/s read and 760MB/s write transfer speed with up to 150k IOPS and the inclusion of multiple UltraDIMM packages allows for linear scaling.
As we can see with this photo and the cover removed, both Diablo and Marvell played very important roles in the creation of UltraDIMM. SSD enthusiasts will be familiar with the Marvell SS9187-BLD2 controller.
Last but not least, here is a shot of several UltraDIMMs as we might see them at work:
Fascinating stuff!
What flash chips are they using to achieve the 200GB or 400GB under those two relatively-small heatsinks!?
Hey there,
The flash chips are custom made in-house by SmartStorage. 19nm MLC, 200/400GB sizes, scalable, and 150K read/65K write IOPS.
That’s pretty much all they told us 😀
I will jump in as I am between destinations at the Airport in Minneapolis. They havent stated what memory was originally used and may not if they have rebranded them. We will check to deterine the orignial source though.
Record response…SMART says Toshiba.
