Silicon Motion is present at Flash Memory Summit 2018 in Santa Clara, California, and they are announcing their new SM2270 dual-mode enterprise-class SSD NAND controller. The dual-mode SM2270 is a complete SSD NAND controller solution, and can be provided with either turnkey firmware or customer specific firmware. The SM2270 supports standard NVMe protocols, plus now supports Open Channel storage implementations. In both modes, The SM2270 provides ultra-high performance, guarantees low latency, and enables more efficient use of storage capacities in high-density, multi-tenant data center usage scenarios.
SM2270 controller specifications:
- PCIe Gen 3 x 8 lanes, supporting standard NVMe 1.3 protocols
- Supports Open Channel implementations such as Microsoft Denali pre-standard
- 16 NAND flash channels and SSD capacities of up to 16TB
- Powerful triple dual-core Arm® Cortex®-R8-based architecture for high data throughput
- Up to 800,000 IOPS in 4KB random read operations
- Supports the latest 3D NAND, including 96-layer TLC and QLC flash, from all major NAND manufacturers
According to Wallace C. Kou, Silicon Motion’s President and CEO, “The SM2270 is the world’s first PCIe SSD controller that supports standard NVMe and Open Channel technology to be available in production. It draws on Silicon Motion’s leadership position in flash controller technology and unrivaled knowledge of the data center SSD storage systems. This combination makes the SM2270 the ideal controller in SSDs for demanding cloud server and data center applications.”
The SM2270 additionally ensures reliable, long-term data storage and retrieval, even under operating condition extremes, by including advanced NAND protection and monitoring technologies that include:
- Power Loss Protection, eliminating the risk of data loss in the event of an unanticipated power interruption
- The 6th generation NANDXtend™ technology, which incorporates machine learning algorithms in support of Silicon Motion’s proprietary high-performance LDPC error correction code (ECC) engine with RAID, helping to ensure superior data integrity, even under operating environment extremes
- End-to-end data path protection, which applies ECC to an SSD’s SRAM and DRAM buffers as well as to primary NAND cells. This maintains the integrity of every single bit of data as it transmits from the host to the SSD, as well as between buffer memories and NAND flash
Silicon Motion’s SM2270 dual-mode controller is available today. It will be on display at Flash Memory Summit 2018 from August 7th through 9th. You can visit Silicon Motion at booth #413.
