Seagate Technology PLC, a leading producer of storage devices, is announcing that it has achieved the major milestone of shipping their 10 millionth solid-state hybrid hard drive (SSHD). Seagate was an original pioneer of hybrid drive technology, and produced the world’s first SSHD. Seagate’s demand for the SSHD has risen significantly over the last two years, as it offers the speed of an SSD in combination with industry-leading highest storage capacities.
An SSHD typically offers performance that is 3-4 times that of a standard hard drive for most PC workloads, especially for laptop/notebook usage scenarios. This has been a significant factor in PC vendors worldwide adopting SSHD usage. Seagate’s proven expertise in both HDD and flash (SSD) technologies permits them to offer a powerful mix of performance and capacity. Explosive data growth continues to fuel demand for systems that integrate hybrid storage solutions such as Seagate’s SSHD. This is being driven by growth in mobile applications, social media, business usage, cloud storage and a variety of consumer markets.
According to Scott Horn, vice president of global marketing for Seagate, “We are seeing growing demand for our SSHDs from the world’s leading PC manufacturers. Hybrid technology is proving to be what we always though it would be – the ultimate combination of high-performance and capacity needs with the price point that’s right for both budget constrained IT organizations and consumers. This achievement is also a reflection of the continued commitment from our dedicated employees whose relentless dedication and personal pride continue to be the fabric of this company.”
Dave Reinsel, IDC’s group vice president for storage and semiconductors, states that “Solid State Hybrid drives continue to be an economical alternative to pure SSDs for PC users seeking to improve PC system responsiveness. This dynamic is being translated into an industry growth rate exceeding 400% from Seagate’s FY2013 to FY2014. Seagate is in a strong position to capitalize on this growth given its leadership position and favorable supply chain dynamics.”

Great now make a laptop model that has 16 to 32GB of flash with write caching. Thanks
