SanDisk, well known throughout the industry for their wide variety of storage products, has announced the release of their ReadyCache SSD caching solution. ReadyCache will include a 32GB SSD as well as Condusive Technologies’ ExpressCache, which is comparable to software that is being offered by the likes of NVELO. Based on what we already know about SSD caching, SanDisk’s new offering should be able to effectively cache hard drives with a capacity of up to 500 GB or so. ReadyCache will be available immediately, and have an MSRP of $59.99.
We’ll, it seems that if there is one thing SSD caching is synonymous with, it’s cost effectiveness. This is the very reason why caching is widely used in products such as Ultrabooks, where profit margins are, for the most part, paper thin. By integrating an effective caching set up, manufacturers are better able to make ends meet, while at the same time responding to consumer demand for lightning fast data storage. Ideally, caching solutions promise hard drive capacity at SSD speeds, though as with any compromise, your mileage may vary. In general though, SSD caches offer a very solid middle ground and can make a big difference when it comes to general responsiveness and even certain heavy usage scenarios. Once an application is loaded and the cache is filled with hot data, the difference between a cached HDD and pure solid state storage is almost indistinguishable.
This is the idea being championed by SanDisk with the release of their ReadyCache solution, and with such reasonable pricing, it will probably be an easy sell to many end users and enthusiasts looking for an economical way to speed up their system, as it’s hard to say no to SSD like performance for around the price of a new game. Speaking of games, SSD caches have historically had a profoundly positive impact on things like level loading times, which is especially advantageous for those trying to remain as immersed as possible. I think we can all agree, there’s nothing like a lengthy loading screen when it comes to intruding a gamer’s suspension of disbelief. That’s not to say only gamers need apply when it comes to Sandisk’s new product. On the contrary, anyone looking to make their system a little (or maybe a lot) snappier will see a tremendous benefit from ReadyCache. By largely eliminating the last major bottleneck inherent to most PC’s, end users can finally see their systems kick on all eight cylinders.
All in all, it appears that SanDisk has delivered an excellent value for those looking to extract significantly higher responsiveness from their PCs. By making ReadyCache within reach of the majority of end user’s budgets, SanDisk has all but guaranteed success for their latest creation. Considering how potent caching solutions have been so far, I can’t help but wonder if we won’t see even more competition in this segment over the next few months. Until cheap multi-TB SSDs become widely available, caching will remain an elegant solution for those wanting both speed and capacity without breaking the bank. Now there’s notion we can all cache in on.
