Samsung is announcing the Samsung Portable SSD T5, built with Samsung’s latest 64-layer V-NAND technology. The T5, a refresh of the popular T3, offers industry-leading data transfer speeds in a durable, compact housing that allows users to access or carry their data virtually anywhere, any time. The move to 64-layer 3D V-NAND provides a 20% performance boost over the T3. The T5 can even be dropped from as high as 6 feet and withstand the fall with no negative consequences. The T5 is being offered in capacities of 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB.
The T5 provides sequential data transfer speeds of up to 540MB/s, and is geared toward business professionals, college students, videographers, photographers and creative professionals that require easy and instant access to their data. The T5 is smaller than a standard business card, at 3.0” x 2.3” x 0.4” (74mm x 57.3mm x 10.5mm), and weighs in at a mere 51 grams. The all-aluminum exterior (previous T3 was part aluminum, part plastic) comes in two color schemes – Alluring Blue for the 250GB and 500GB models and Deep Black for the 1TB and 2TB versions.
According to Un-Soo Kim, Samsungs’ Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing, Memory Business, “Samsung has been pushing the envelope of what is possible in portable storage and solid state drives for years, and the Portable SSD T5 continues our legacy of leadership and innovation. We are confident that the T5 will exceed consumers’ expectations for external storage by offering faster speeds and a solid design that is lightweight and conveniently pocket-sized. It is the ideal portable storage product for consumers and professionals who are in search of a fast, durable and secure device.”
Samsung also provides the T5 with AES 256-bit hardware data encryption, which is managed via the Samsung Portable SSD Software for PCs and Macs (included), which gives an easy means to configure security settings, as well as to receive the latest firmware and software updates. There is also a mobile app available for Android devices (no mobile app for Apple products at this time). Also included are two connection cables to make the T5 compatible with a wide variety of devices – a USB-C to C cable and a USB-C to A cable. Samsung is backing the T5 with a 3-year limited warranty.
Pricing for the T5 is stated as $129.99 for the 250GB, @199.99 for the 500GB, $399.99 for the 1TB and $799.99 for the 2TB model. These are the same price points as the T3, except for the 250GB version is $10.00 more than the 250GB T3. For more information, you can view the T5 product page here.
