Plextor is announcing a new generation of external SSDs that feature a USB Type-C interface. The Plextor EX1 is slim and lightweight, as well as offering extreme data transfer speeds. The EX1 features a shock-proof case design that is both rugged and attractive, offered in either a titanium silver or gold finish.
The USB Type-C interface (USB 3.1 Gen 2) allows the EX1 to attain sequential read speeds of up to 550MB/s, and sequential write speeds of up to 500MB/s. This is some 10 X the performance of standard USB 2.0 devices. Large files become quite simple to either transfer, copy or back up at these speeds. Even playing and/or editing of ultra-high-definition video files, or post-production of high-resolution photos and images is able to be accomplished nearly instantaneously. It can also be used as an operating system boot drive or data base drive.
At a mere 30 grams, the simple yet elegant curved design is minimally larger than a standard flash drive, but virtually immune to the usual problems encountered with external drives, such as shaking and over-heating. The EX1 is being offered in capacity points of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.
According to Eva Lee, Senior Director at Plextor, “Data transfer speed, durability, and stability are the key factors for consumers when shopping for an external storage device. Plextor’s highly regarded SSD technology has given EX1 its excellent reading/writing speeds, an extended service life, and stable performance. The new generation Type-C interface offers even faster connectivity with the latest computers and mobile devices. Sophisticated, lightning-fast, shock-resistant, and durable, EX1 establishes a new standard for the next generation of external storage devices.”
Plextor’s EX1 is rated for Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of 2.4 million hours, allowing Plextor to back the EX1 with a three-year limited warranty. The package includes a Type-C to Type-A USB adapter cable, AES256 encryption software, and a carrying pouch. It is compatible with Android OTG for mobile storage (requires separate data transfer cable for your mobile phone – not included).
The Plextor EX1 is anticipated to be release later this month. For more information, you can view the EX1 product page here.
UPDATE: Plextor has announced that they have extended the warranty period for the EX1 from three years to five years.
