3D MARK STORAGE GAMING BENCHMARK
UL Solutions has created a new storage gaming benchmark that we will start to use as new SSDs come in. The 3DMark Storage Benchmark DLC extends 3DMark Advanced Edition with a dedicated component test for measuring the gaming performance of SSDs and other storage hardware. It supports all the latest storage technologies and tests practical, real-world gaming performance for activities such as loading games, saving progress, installing game files, and recording gameplay video streams.
Yet another amazing result! The Micron 6400 came back with the best test result to date of all SSDs we have tested.
REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS
Let’s start this analysis by stating that it is simply too bad that the Micron 4600 Gen 5 NVMe SSD is not yet available as a Crucial retail SSD right now. It is an amazing SSD, the key of course is it being a single sided ‘drive’ that is able to reach the highest data transfer rate to date through the lowest power consumption yet. It is only available in client PC builds and we can’t wait until this gets into an oem laptop. What a find that would be! We are almost tempted to head out and purchase a new current gen ultrabook just to see if we can hit 14GB/s in a lappy…but for that cost. It’s the downfall of being a small mom and pop business you know.
The Micron 4600 Gen 5 NVMe SSD achieved over 14GB/s data transfer with over 2 million IOPS. We never expected that from a single sided SSD but that comes with a premium SSD controller in the SM2508 and premium memory in Micron’s own G9 TLC NAND. It was a consistent leader in our synthetic benchmarks and remained at the top in PCMark 10, 3DMark and had the fastest data transfer we had ever seen in our true data transfer testing. Imagine two seconds to transfer 14 HD videos. We would like to see the same 5-year limited warranty we see in retail SSDs, and we most likely will when all works itself out as a Crucial SSD, but client applications, that 3-year limited warranty would be the norm. For today though, we are going to close this report off and I can’t wait to install it into my HP Spectre X360. If she heats up too much, I will report back!
