Marvell is announcing their newest series of NVMe solid-state drive (SSD) controllers for high-performance PC client and edge computing applications, as well as for mainstream use. These latest Gen 3×4 PCIe SSD controllers, designated as the 88SS1084 (4-channel) and 88SS1100 (8-channel), provide top level performance, reliability and endurance and will help accelerate adoption of NVMe SSDs for emerging edge and client computing. Marvell’s latest controllers integrate their 4th generation of NANDEdge™ technology, which offers advanced error correction capabilities that are compatible with emerging 96-layer triple-level-cell (TLC) and quad-level-cell (QLC) NAND architectures, enabling future SSD solutions.
NVMe SSDs are able to meet the ever-increasing storage performance needs of gaming, video-on-demand, photography, imaging , CAD and video surveillance applications. These new series of NVMe SSDs are able to deliver up to 3.6GB/s of bandwidth and random read/write speeds of up to 700,000 IOPS. They also support lower voltage NAND devices and LPDDR4 DRAM components, conserving system power. Increasingly data-intensive workloads are processed/stored more quickly and reliably.
According to Nigel Alvares, Marvell’s vice president of SSD and Data Center Storage Solutions, “Marvell is expanding and broadening our leading portfolio of NVMe SSD controllers to help our customers address the growing amount of diversifying SSD product opportunities with emerging 3D TLC and QLC NAND components. Our common SSD hardware and firmware controller architecture spanning our client, data center and enterprise products enables our customers to quickly develop tailored SSDs for each of these segments with minimal incremental engineering effort and achieve optimal return on investment of their precious firmware engineering resources.”
Hiroo Ohta, technology executive for Toshiba Memory Corporation, states that “We are excited to grow our strong collaboration with Marvell to enable our next-generation BiCS FLASH Gen.4 devices with its latest family of SSD controllers. Marvell’s common hardware and firmware controller architecture will help our mutual customers accelerate time to market of their SSD solutions and position them for market share gains across all segments.”
Marvell’s 88SS1084 and 88SS1100 controllers are available for purchase immediately. You can view the product page for these new controllers here.
