PACKAGE AND MEMORY OVERVIEW
G.Skill has packaged the F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL in a standard plastic clam shell with cardboard insert which is a far cry from the dreaded blister pack. Clam shell cases are typically the norm and while some can be too loose to hold the stick in place, there was no such issue here. Everything came securely in place, and more importantly, did not result in the loss of a few fingers.
As part of the RipjawsX series, this memory kit is draped in sleek, dark-red/maroon heat-spreaders with heat-dissipating fins on the top. Although the design is an extravagant one, it certainly does look sophisticated, especially when paired with an ASUS R.O.G. motherboard like the Rampage II Extreme, seeing as how the PCB has a nice matte-black finish. Color-coordination is a make-or-break for some, but for me personally, it is a non-issue. With the varying differences in components these days, it is almost impossible to find matching sets, and aesthetics are simply and purely a trivial, subjective matter.
Also, my favourite colour is red.
On the ASRock Z68 Extreme 4, the G.SKILL RipjawsX modules fit nice and firmly, with enough room for clearance. In a four-slot configuration, there is enough room for large heat sinks like the Noctua NH-D14, or Thermaltake Frio, however it is more dependent on motherboard layout as the fins on these sticks are the same height as those on Patriots Viper Xtreme Division 2 DIMMs.
In this close-up, we can see that the modules are double-sided and that the heat spreaders are making excellent contact on both sides. Furthermore, there is a nice little crevasse in the middle of the modules to push the sticks into a place, making the installation even easier.
