This morning is Samsungs official unveiling of the long awaited SSD 830 Series SATA 3 SSD family.
Capable of performance expectations of 500MB/s high sequential reads and 350MB/s write, the new SSD 830 will be available in capacities of 64, 128, 256 and 512GB.
Dabbling lightly in limited consumer markets with the 470 Series that we reviewed here some months ago, Samsung has elected to push forward into the SSD arena with a full on assault and these SSDs will be available in e-tailers and retailers world wide as we have learned.
The fact that the SSD 830 is born and bred completely of Samsung components is just the tip of the iceberg as there are so many extras under the surface that this just might leave your head spinning. For instance, migrating could never be easier as no power cord is required to power the SSD externally due to its extreme low power requirements which are more than sufficent through the plugged in USB.
The Migration Kit is also one of the first we have heard of to include a full retail copy of Norton Ghost which will be registered and completely owned by the purchaser of the SSD.
Samsung went that extra step to ensure that the consumer wasn’t saddled with a SSD tied feature limited edition of a migration software as we have seen so many times before.
Along with so many other features, Samsung will also be including their newly upgraded Samsung Magician for SSD 830 Series SSDs. This will include a DOD compliant ATA level Secure Erase that doesn’t require one to exit into DOS and try and figure out exactly what they are doing. If the drive is a secondary drive, the user can conduct a erase while remaining in Windows. There is also a ‘Auto-Configurator’ which allows the user to decide which settings are best turned off within the Win 7 environment and which are best left as is. Oh no, is our SSD Optimization Guide at risk of becoming obsolete?
There is one thing that really surprised us with respect to the SSD 830 series that we have yet to see elsewhere and that is user configurable over provisioning. Although Samsung will have its own recommended settings to help the user along, complete control is within the users grasp as they can decide exactly how much of the SSD to dedicate to over provisioning for their specific needs.
Last but not least, final pricing has not been revealed as of yet but we think the consumer may be in for a bit of a surprise as Samsung is really pushing the 512GB capacities with their new NAND flash memory included. We may finally see price points to come down further yet making the 512GB capacity SSDs a reality for the consumer.
Keep your eyes peeled here at The SSD Review because we have been guaranteed to be one of the first out of the gate to test the SSD 830.
Here is Samsungs official release:
SEOUL, Korea “ August 17, 2011 “ Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, announced today its new lineup of advanced internal solid state drives (SSDs), the Samsung SSD 830 series, will be available in October to consumers.
The new drives incorporate a high-performance Serial ATA Revision 3.0 interface, doubling the data bandwidth of Samsungs previous SSD product, the SSD 470 series. The advanced feature set dramatically increases performance, making the new drives a good fit for anyone desiring an extreme computing experience without purchasing an entirely new PC.
Solid state drives have long been the preferred choice for those seeking the very best in performance, said UnSoo Kim, vice president of memory brand product marketing, Samsung Electronics. With the Samsung SSD 830 Series, we are raising that performance to even higher levels, while also delivering unparalleled Samsung design and convenience in the package.
The Samsung SSD 830 series is distinguished by its stylish and chic exterior, delivering precision engineering inside and out. The new high-performance drives come in a brushed metal enclosure, highlighted by a deep black tone, which effectively embodies Samsungs legendary SSD performance and reliability. The orange accent in the corner identifies the drives as Samsung.
SSDs utilize flash memory for data storage rather than the spinning platters found in conventional hard disk drives. This results in much faster performance, lower energy consumption, reduced heat output and improved reliability without risk of a hard drive crash.
The new SSD series builds on the success of the acclaimed 470 Series SSD. Samsungs proprietary firmware, the brains of the drive, delivers exceptional performance. Samsung, unique among SSD manufacturers, engineers all of its components in-house. This allows it to meticulously fine-tune its hardware and software for enhanced reliability. In addition, the included Samsung Magician software keeps the SSD running at its peak.
Samsung’s full upgrade package delivers a superior user experience and a safe and easy upgrade solution. By eliminating the need to reinstall applications, manually move data, and reconfigure user settings, the included Norton Ghost software reduces the time it takes to upgrade to an SSD by up to 75%. The bundle includes a bracket for installing the 2.5″ drive in a 3.5″ bay, all required cables, and detailed instructions. Notebook upgrade kits include a USB to SATA adapter cable.
The Samsung SSD 830 series will be available in capacities of 64, 128, 256 and 512GB*. Detailed features will be disclosed at the official launch, which is scheduled for October.

When will the OEM version be shipping with OEM laptops like the Dell XPS 15z, or the MBA?
SITE RESPONSE: The oem version is presently being shipped to manufacturers for their systems and has been for a few weeks now.
Do you know of any OEM’s specifically that offer the pm830 in a laptop configuration today, (or when, in the future)? Trying to find this out through Dell customer service seems like an impossible mission.
SITE RESPONSE: The new PM830 has been shipping to manufacturers for a few weeks for inclusion into their systems. At this point, we have no knowledge of any such sample being seen in the wild just yet. As for Dell, historically they may not announce the new drive in their systems given exception to the fact that you may see 512GB ssds appear. Its hard to say at this point.
Seeing that Samsung will not release pricing of the retail version until October, I wonder if Dell is restricted to offer the 512GB version of the PM830 at least until then, (since a price would have to be listed for consumers selecting it on their website). Do you know if this is how it usually works? I am very interested in paying the premium for the 512GB, especially if I don’t have to wait until (the end of?) October.
